WINNER #1
My International favorite find for August 2017 is the 17th century Gold Fede-ring, found by Wilfred de H. from the Netherlands with his AT Pro International.

Wilfred’s story: In the first week of my holiday, I decided to take my AT Pro for a walk. The field I had in mind was searched very often, also by other detectorists. The first 2 signals were junk but then I got a signal which sounded like a pull-tab. I decided to dig. When I opened up the hole, there was a nice yellow color. In disbelieve I picked it up and looked at it. WOW in my hand I had a very nice gold ring. After 10 minutes of wondering I was able to search again. The rest of the afternoon I found a few more coins and relics. At home I found out that it was a 17th century Fede-ring. What a way to begin a holiday!

My second international favorite find for August 2017 is the Crescentic Terret Ring fron an Ironage Chariot, found by Paula P. from the U.K. with her AT Pro.

Paula’s story: I was out on a club dig with my AT Pro, the field we had was huge and I decided I wanted to detect in a dip at the far end. I had detected about two thirds of the way there and my batteries drained. I went back to the car and changed them and headed back to the dip. I had been detecting for about 5 minutes when I got a scratchy signal. I dig down about 8" and the signal started to hit the 90s and I thought deep iron. As I had dug so far I decided to continue and at about 16" this beauty popped out. I was speechless at first and shouted to a fellow detectorist to for an I.D. We knew it was something special. I was shaking for hours after finding it. The buzz it created amongst other members on the day made it a day to remember. There are only another 8 that have been recorded and this is said to be one of the best and dates to 100bc.

WINNER #3
My third international favorite find for August 2017 is the Visigothic Gold Coin, found by Antonio P. from Portugal with his AT Pro.

Antonio’s story: On the day I found this coin, because of forest fires, I couldn’t reach one of my favorite sites. The fire department wouldn’t let me drive through the main road. It was a frightening site. On the horizon I saw at least 4 different fires. I tried different roads to get to the spot using GPS, but had to turn around. I was not feeling safe because a while ago over 60 people had lost their life on a road in Portugal surrounded by fire.

But I overcame my fear (or was I just plain stupid?) and decided to try my luck on a small forest road already filing up with smoke, with the fire raging not far away. Well, I made it through and got to my spot, a small hill with lots of fragments of roman pottery scattered all around it. I noticed right away that a farmer had decided to plant some rows of water melons on a patch of land and had ploughed the ground, and I decided to start there. And I cannot describe my joy and happiness when my first (!) signal was this amazing gold tremis from the Visigoth King RECESVINTO – (Raikaswinþs 649-672 ad) (1,39gr 20mm) minted in Toledo.

This was a day I will never forget.

WINNER #1
My international favorite find for May 2017 is the Gold Roman Coin in Mint Condition, found by Harry M. from the U.K. with his AT Pro.

Harry’s story: After a week of no metal detecting I had a sudden feeling that I needed to get out. I had been at work all day but something told me just go to the field for a hour, so I dusted off my Garrett AT Pro and headed out. The hunt started out as normal. I found a button and then a found a small crusty bronze Roman coin. I carried on detecting away when I got a tone reading in the high 70s, so I dug and out popped a gold disk covered in mud. My first thought was the dreaded bottle top or something similar but when I picked it up it had some weight to it. I saw through the mud lettering and I immediately dropped it and freaked out. I pulled out my phone to film for my YouTube channel and so I wiped the mud off, and in front of me was the most beautiful mint condition gold Roman coin. This is my first gold find and for it to be a Roman coin is truly amazing. I’ve been detecting over a year now first with a Garrett Ace 250 and now with the Garrett AT Pro. I’m still buzzing. Thanks to Garrett for the awesome machines.

My second favorite international find for May 2017 is the Gold Iceni Quarter Stater, found by Roy H. from the U.K. with his AT Pro.

Roy’s story: Talk about an amazing find…I’d always hoped to find a gold coin before leaving England and the AT Pro came through Big Time!!! I was out on a field for several hours and the day was coming to an end. My wife called and asked if I could leave the field and pick something up for her before the store closed. I said yes (of course) and was preparing to head back to the car when she called back. “Nevermind”, she said, “I found something here I can use instead.” No more than 6 feet after I picked back up the hunt, I got a scratchy and erratic tone. But…it was enough to get me curious. The Pro was showing a signal about 8 inches deep, but was only about 4 inches down (the quarter stater is only about 1/2 inch across and pretty thin) BAMM!!!, there it was. It was sticking out of the clod and since I’d always promised not to keep my first gold a secret, I left the field and took the Iceni home, still in the clod. I showed it to my wife and we freed it from the dirt together, over the kitchen sink. It was fantastic to share the moment with her. Thanks Vaughan! Now back to the field…

Jason’s story: “Iv’e been a serving British soldier since 1994, while walking around the old RAF Brampton site Where I live which is being redeveloped after being sold off. It is also a stones throw from The “SAMUEL PEPYS” House. I got speaking to some Archaeologists who where doing pre development history surveys, they kindly allowed me to bring my GTI 2500 down as they had found a number of Roman finds including 7 kilns. I found a few barely recognisable coins and clothing pins but also I found 2 coins one of which was a 1797 Cartwheel penny(12-13 inch deep and the best signal I ever had) in rather good condition after a short clean up at home. I also found a Henry VII AD 1495-1504 Silver Groat. I had barely been there 5 minutes before finding the coins, the archaeologists spent most of the time arguing over who was taking the next turn with my machine. I defy anyone say that’s not Great advertising for the Garrett Range ......Big smiles . Fabulous machine my GTI 2500 I love it.”

My third international favorite find for January 2017 is the 8th Century Irish Annular Brooch, discovered by Seán M. from Ireland with his AT Pro.

Seán’s story: I was detecting on quite a new permission on the grounds that I help try to find a lost engagement ring. I had been out for around 3 hours with about an hour of light left. I hit a faint but solid signal and started to dig. With the ground quite wet it was hard to make out what the fragment was. As I always do, I checked the hole again using my Pro Pointer and another fragment came out followed by more.

Once home I washed off the loose dirt and soon realised I had something special; a Celtic brooch. And amazingly all of it was there! It’s late 8th Century in date with gold gilding along the Celtic designs and a piece of gold leaf just visible under the dirt. The eyes of the beasts are likely to be red glass. It is currently in the hands of the National Museum for recording and preservation. A beautiful piece of Irish history saved for future generations.

My third favorite find is the Ancient Gold Ring 5.29 Grams, found by Yaacob O. from Malaysia with his AT Gold.

Yaacob’s story: Kota Tinggi (High Castle) where I was living is a capital of Johor State from 1528 till 1699. By using my Garrett AT Gold, I recover many ancient coins made from tin, copper, silver and gold. Even the jewels also can be found down deep under the mud at the river banks. Last Saturday, I went for hunting at the river banks, and after dig and take out the mud, I found the original soil with some of broken porcelain. After dig 3 feet down, Garrett AT Gold detects the target. But this time, the ID is higher than tin or gold coin (normally tin and gold coin the id from 45 to 56 but this time is 61. I slowly take out the soil and finally it’s in my hand. I have to segregate the soil careful and use 5"X 8" coil to find the object because I don’t have the Pro Pointer. I shout “Gold ring”. Ancient gold ring was recovered and that’s why I choose Garrett AT Gold because it can be use in any situation and fully waterproof and can be using even in the mud!

NOVEMBER 2016 HAS TWO WINNERS

WINNER #1
My favorite international find for November 2016 is the 18k Gold Ring 18 Grams, found by Steve B. from Ontario, Canada with his AT Pro International.

Steve’s story: It was a cool morning on November 27th started an early hunt at 7:00am just as the sun was coming up on a cool fall morning. I was swinging at an old school built 50 years ago which I have never searched before.

After searching and finding a couple silver dimes and lots of clad I ended up searching around the soccer nets which is my favourite spots to search as I have found lots of jewellery in the nets.

I was swinging beside the net and got a high tone around 84-86 ID signal on my AT Pro which I thought was just the metal post on the soccer net so I pin pointed the signal and dug my plug about 12" from the post. After flipping the plug I found a monster Aztec ring still in the plug around 7" deep. I took a picture of the ring in the plug wiped it off and threw it in my pouch thinking it was a junker ring.

After the 8 hour hunt I cleaned off the ring and saw that it was reddish colour and had a stamp on the back marked 18k. I gave it a salt and vinegar bath which removed the reddish colour then gave it a baking soda and water paste rub to clean it up more. This is when I noticed the colour changed to yellow goldfish tone. I posted it on the Garrett Facebook page where I had mixed reviews from other detectorists telling me it’s fake or it’s real and gold can tarnish.

I had my doubts so I went and took it to my jeweller and had it acid tested for gold and sure enough it tested positive for 18k gold! I was shocked he offered me $500 cash for the ring on the spot but I refused to sell it but instead paid $20 to get it polished up lol.

I later looked up the melt value and based on the weight of the ring at 17.4 grams it’s worth between $700-750 CDN. This is such a weird but amazing find due to the discolouration of the ring coming out of the ground which must have been there for 50-60 years to tarnish this way. 18k is 75% gold mixed with 25% copper so I’m guessing that’s why it had that colour to it. Anyways this is the biggest gold ring I have ever found in my years of metal detecting so I hope you enjoy my story and the pictures ! I am keeping the ring and getting it resized so I can wear it proudly and share my story with other detectorists I meet. Thanks for reading and happy hunting!

My second international favorite find is the Celtic Gold Stater, found by Gary B. from the U.K. with his AT&Gold.

Gary’s story: At the beginning of the November me and a friend were on some permission we have had for a few years. The fields had gone very quiet, but this year the farmer decided to deep plough one of them, so when the time was ready we were out there. The rain was coming down very heavy. We had been in the field about a hour and thinking of calling it a day when suddenly pinged a lovely sweet tone of around 70. I dug down 4 or 5 inches, AT Pro-Pointer ready, and in a piece of hard orange subsoil there it was. At first I thought it was a button. What a lovely surprise when I realized it was a Celtic gold stater! First gold I have had. From a tribe local to me over 2000 years old. Amazing. Been working with the Garrett AT Gold for about 3 years, had some really lovely finds. What a great machine. Happy hunting out there folks. Gary
